Title:Dye sampler
Date:Jun 2012
Original Size: 2.4 x 1.5 m
Notes: The main sections are constructed from a (slightly moth-eaten) blanket, cut up into rectangles and dyed with natural dyes (mostly with alum mordant). I included squares of cotton mordanted with aluminium acetate in some of the dyebaths. On each section I have machine embroidered the name and latin name, and then embroidered/appliquéed a picture of the dyestuff. In some cases I have included hammered or trapped plant material, silk paper, procion dyed fabrics, beads, etc.. These are joined together with inkle braids in natural-dyed aran/double knitting yarns, to make a series of hangings which could be used separately or in combination The inkle braids have basic warp patterns, and some of the yarns are dip-dyed to give an ikat effect. I like the contrast of the detailed embroidery with the basic background. So far I have produced 6 "banners", with four dye samples on each, but there are more dyestuffs that I want to illustrate, so this is ongoing.
