Title:Succession-Regeneration (revised)
Date:Apr 2023
Original Size: 130x63 cm
Notes: My textile hanging produced for the MTF "Evolve" exhibition - revised by adding block printed "graffiti" on to the collars and cuffs. Modified to submit to the RBSA Open exhibition (rejected) - but put into the Hall Green Arts Spring exhibition - and sold. It represents the way the countryside is taken over by concrete, but the plants push through tarmac to the sun again. Five sections: green fields; suburban sprawl; concrete jungle; green shoots of recovery; urban jungle. These started with some iron carrier cloths used for ecoprinting, which had images of Herb Robert and cotinus leaves. They were quilted as a background. I then added organza, trapping various scraps between the layers and quilted again, partly from the wrong side to outline some of the bits with thicker threads. After that the different sections had more items added, recycling parts of previous pictures (and collars and cuffs from old shirts) to give interesting textures. They go from the very 3-d first section, gradually flattening as the concrete takes over, and then getting more textured as the plants push through. Includes tatting, crochet, some dyeing, and even some hand sewing. Then printed over with acrylic paint to add "graffiti" to the urban bits
